Kogarah is the heart of the St George district, a suburb that's grown up around St George Hospital into what locals call a medical city.

Its leafy streets carry a genuine mix of housing eras. Federation and inter-war double-brick cottages sit alongside mid-century brick villas, with a dense high-rise core clustered near the rail line and the hospital.
